This and the next two posts will specifically highlight older Audi fast wagons that were never officially sold in North America that I saw on display at this year's Legends of the Autobahn, starting with the B7-generation Audi RS4 Avant. This particular generation of the Audi RS4 Avant was produced from 2006 to 2008, and while the Avant was reserved for Europe and a few other overseas markets, Audi did offer sedan and convertible versions of the B7-generation RS4 in North America. Powering the B7 RS4 Avant is a 4.2-liter V8 with 414 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Its V8 sends power to all four wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. The B7 Audi RS4 Avant goes form zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed limited to 155 mph. Besides performance upgrades, the RS4 gains an improved suspension, flared fenders, and a more aggressive front bumper over the A4 and S4. Inside, carbon fiber trim was added to the steering wheel and dashboard, and RS badges were placed on both the steering wheel and seats. One significant benefit the RS4 Avant had over its sedan and cabriolet counterparts is its additional cargo capacity that makes the Avant more suitable for family road trips and hauling larger items.
After the B7 RS4 ended production in 2008, the Audi RS4 soldiered on for two more generations as only Avant wagons that were never available Stateside before being fully replaced by the new RS5. Audi revealed the new RS5 earlier this year and will offer it in both Sportback and Avant body styles. As for the specific example pictured in this post that was on display at Legends of the Autobahn this year, it has been outfitted with a set of aftermarket wheels and an APR tune that generates better power figures and performance over stock. It may not be the coolest or my favorite Audi from this year's Legends of the Autobahn, but I was absolutely intrigued by this RS4 Avant since I am a huge fast wagon guy, and I am thrilled to have seen one up close without needing to travel overseas in order to do so. Overall, the B7 Audi RS4 Avant is a beautiful and awesome fast wagon with a layout and formula that many enthusiasts love. Watch this space for the two other older Audi fast wagon models that were originally forbidden fruit in North America and on display at this year's Legends of the Autobahn coming up in the next two posts.
