The legendary Mercedes SL roadster was redesigned for 2022 and has been sort of rebranded and re-positioned to appeal to younger demographics. It seems to have a somewhat different and better feel to it compared to its predecessor. As I am writing this, Mercedes-Benz offers two versions of the new AMG SL: the SL55 and SL63, but could add new versions down the road. Both examples featured here are of the SL63, making the faster, more powerful, top-of-the-line AMG SL the main focus of this post. Powering the new AMG SL63 is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, sending power to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic gearbox. It launches from zero to 60 mph in three seconds and is capable of a top speed of nearly 200 mph. Four-wheel steering comes standard on the new AMG SL, and it now features a fabric softtop instead of its predecessor's folding hardtop to optimize cargo space and conserve weight. Although it is classified as a roadster, the AMG SL comes with two rear seats, but those two rear seats are best used for additional cargo space than transporting passengers since they are incredibly small.
Inside, the interior is pretty luxurious, with notable standard features such as Mercedes-Benz's signature Airscarf that blows cold or warm air on the driver and/or passenger's neck from the seats depending on outside weather conditions, a large 11.9-inch center touchscreen display with Mercedes' latest MBUX infotainment system and "Hey Mercedes" virtual assistant, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge display. Pricing for the latest Mercedes-AMG SL63 starts at around $180,000, with options and dealer markup pushing that figure north of $200,000. The two examples shown in this post were for sale and on display at my local Mercedes-Benz dealer back in late September, and soon after I found out that it had the new Mercedes-AMG SL in stock, I had to make a visit to check them out more closely. Besides these two examples, I have seen at least one or two other current Mercedes-AMG SLs on the road but was unable to take photos of them. Overall, the new Mercedes-AMG SL is a stunning and amazing sports car and luxury roadster. I also see it as a significant step up over its predecessor.
