Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II (R34)

The R34 generation from the early 2000s is the coolest and most iconic Skyline GT-R ever made, and featured in this post is the top-of-the-line version of the R34 Skyline GT-R, the V-Spec II. This generation of the famed Skyline GT-R entered production in 1999, while the V-Spec II was introduced in 2000 as the replacement for the V-Spec I. Powering the R34 Skyline GT-R V-Spec II is a 2.6-liter twin-turbo RB26DETT inline-six with 276 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. Vehicle testing determined that the Skyline GT-R V-Spec II produced up to 334 horsepower, but the initial figure of 276 was understated by Nissan due to legal reasons. The RB26DETT in every R34-gen Skyline GT-R sends power to all four wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. It launches from zero to 60 mph in the high four-second range and tops out at 155 mph. Other key aspects of the R34 Skyline GT-R consist of added front bumper air intakes, a widened body with flared fenders, a carbon fiber adjustable rear wing, a carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser, and a 2+2 interior layout. As for the V-Spec II specifically, it gains a stiffer suspension and bigger brake rotors than those of other Skyline GT-R models, a carbon fiber hood with increased ventilation, different turn signal lenses, a black cloth interior compared to previous Skyline GT-R models' grey cloth interiors, and aluminum pedals.

Only 1,855 units of the R34 Skyline GT-R V-Spec II were built from 2000 to 2002, most of which were primarily sold in Japan. Those units that have been legally imported to the U.S. under federal exemptions have become hot and valuable commodities, generally selling for between $200,000 and $300,000 on the resale market. In fact, there was an R34 Skyline GT-R V-Spec II example that sold for $577,500 at Mecum auction in Monterey in 2022. The early 2000s Skyline GT-R's fame and immense popularity is credited to its initial exclusivity to right-hand drive markets, symbolism of Japanese car culture, and the Fast & Furious film franchise. The specific example pictured in this post is my first time ever seeing a Skyline GT-R R34 in person, which I happened to notice in a nearby parking lot while attending this year's Exotics on Broadway show in Monterey. As soon as I noticed it pull into that nearby parking lot to Exotics on Broadway, I had to get a closer look. Prior to this moment, I had been waiting all my life to see this Japanese sports car icon up close, and it was absolutely incredible. I could also tell that this particular Skyline GT-R V-Spec II had been modified, but I am not entirely sure what many of its exact modifications are. Overall, I am not a fan of most Nissans, but the R34 Skyline GT-R is certainly one of the coolest and my favorite Japanese cars of all time, and I am extremely thankful to have spotted one while attending Exotics on Broadway this year.
