The 904 Carrera GTS is a legendary Porsche sports car and race car from the mid 1960s. It debuted in late 1963 for the 1964 racing season, replacing the 718. Powering the 904 Carrera GTS is a 2.0-liter four-cam flat-four with 180 horsepower paired to a five-speed manual gearbox, launching from zero to 60 mph in under six seconds and capable of a top speed of 160 mph. It is also the first Porsche to feature a fiberglass body and steel ladder chassis. Most 904 Carrera GTS examples were painted in silver, especially since silver is Germany's modern national racing color. It has garnered plenty of success during its racing tenure, highlighted by its debut at Sebring, first-place finishes at the Targa Florio and Le Mans, and a third-place finish at the Nurburgring in 1964, along with class wins at several races and second place overall at the Monte Carlo Rally in 1965.
A total of 106 road-going 904 Carrera GTS examples were ever built between 1964 and 1965, with Porsche replacing the 904 with the 906 in 1966. A decent amount of replicas were produced as well, with the example pictured here that I saw at my local Porsche club's Cars & Coffee meet in January more than likely being a replica due to some of its styling cues. Overall, the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS is an impressive and amazing classic Porsche race car and sports car, and this more-than-likely replica was one of the most unique and intriguing vehicles on display at the first car meet I attended in 2024.
