The De Tomaso P72 is a modern reincarnation of a vintage Le Mans prototype race car. It was first introduced in 2019 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed to commemorate De Tomaso's 60th anniversary and is specifically based on the P70 and other Le Mans race cars from the 1970s, with production slated to begin at the end of this past year. The P72 is also inspired by the Ferrari P4/5 and shares many of its underpinnings with the Apollo IE. Powering the P72 is a supercharged 5.0-liter Ford Coyote V8 with 700 horsepower and 608 lb-ft of torque paired to a six-speed manual transmission. It contains a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and was designed to be more of a grand touring supercar than a full-on race car. In addition, the P72 features a premium interior with leather seats and upholstery along with metallic trim in other areas such as the gauges, steering wheel, gear shifter, interior door handles, and mirrors. Its interior can be outfitted in a variety of different leathers and metals, while butterfly doors are another signature element of the P72. Practicality was one of the last things De Tomaso thought of when creating the P72, as it has a tiny trunk and not much more available cargo space.
As hinted by its name, only 72 examples will be built of the P72. I anticipate that the P72 is worth at least $2-3 million a pop. I saw this masterpiece up close for the first time ever at this past Exotics on Broadway back in August. I would've taken more photos of it, but it showed up towards the end of the show, there were large crowds surrounding the vehicle, and my friend and I were limited on time and had to drive a few hours back home from that show before it got dark outside. Still, these two pics will suffice for this post, and they don't do this car justice. Overall, the De Tomaso P72 is an absolutely stunning and special rare supercar that flew under the radar at Exotics on Broadway. It wasn't designed for all-out speed, but the P72's sheer beauty, comfort, and exclusivity make it a greatly appealing option in the exotic car space.
