Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34)

The R34-generation Nissan Skyline GT-R is easily one of the coolest and most iconic Japanese cars of all time. It was produced from 1999 to 2002 and is motivated by Nissan's famed 2.6-liter RB26DETT twin-turbo inline-six with a standard output of 276 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. Actual power figures for the R34 Skyline GT-R vary between 327 and 493 horsepower depending on the variant. Power is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Other standard performance metrics of the R34 Skyline GT-R consist of a 0-62 mph time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. Besides the base version, the R34 Skyline GT-R was available in V-Spec I, V-Spec II, V-Spec Nur, and Nismo Z-Tune variants.

Nissan built a total of 11,578 R34 Skyline GT-Rs throughout its production run, most of which were sold in Japan. A much smaller fraction of those were sold to other right-hand drive markets like the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia, while the R34 Skyline GT-R has now become fully legal to import to the US in recent years. These have been popular enthusiast vehicles and cultural symbols in the States largely in part due to the Fast & Furious movie franchise. The R34 Skyline GT-R is highly sought-after in the US, often selling for well into the $100,000s and $200,000s on the resale market. Featured in this post is the third and most recent R34 Skyline GT-R I have seen in person, which appeared at the third car show I attended during the first weekend of May. Besides the supercars, this Skyline GT-R was one of the coolest and most impressive cars on display there. It is also the first and only example I have seen in my local area, as the other two were previously spotted in out-of-town scenarios. Although I am not a huge Nissan fan, the R34 Skyline GT-R is and has been one of my favorite Japanese cars in existence. Its beauty, status, and exclusivity make the R34 Skyline GT-R extremely appealing and eye-catching, and I expect to eventually see more of them up close as their popularity and demand continue to increase.
