Mercedes-AMG E53 Wagon

The AMG E53 is the newest fast wagon from Mercedes-Benz and the most intriguing and appealing version of the current E-Class. It first hit showrooms earlier this year, months after its sedan counterpart went on sale. Powering the new AMG E53 is a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six paired to an electric motor producing a combined 604 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. The horsepower figure in the new AMG E53 is roughly the same as that of the previous AMG E63 S that featured a 4.0-liter V8. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard in the AMG E53, sending power to all four wheels. The latest Mercedes-Benz fast wagon launches from zero to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and tops out at 174 mph. Exterior styling distinctions the AMG E53 boasts over the standard E-Class consist of an AMG signature grille, side air intakes, wider fenders, unique and larger wheel options, and an AMG rear diffuser with a quad exhaust setup. In addition, the E53 badge on its rear liftgate is outlined in red, indicating that it's a plug-in hybrid, and the E53's plug-in hybrid powertrain makes the new high-performance E-Class roughly 700 pounds heavier than the previous AMG E63 S. Unlike the E450 All-Terrain, the AMG E53 Wagon comes standard with four-wheel steering, resulting in a slightly-improved turning radius for the AMG E53.

The most notable aspect of the AMG E53 Wagon's interior is its available massive superscreen, which stretches the length of the dashboard and houses the main infotainment display and a separate display for the front passenger. Its digital gauge cluster is super configurable as well. Pricing for the new Mercedes-AMG E53 wagon starts at around $95,000.

Pictured here is the first new AMG E53 that I have seen in wagon form in person, which is a recent arrival at my local Mercedes-Benz dealer. This particular example is equipped with several different options that increase its sticker price to just over $114,000. It is also the main reason for my latest visit to my local Mercedes-Benz dealer this past Saturday, and I am grateful that I had the chance to see the newest AMG station wagon up close before it potentially disappeared from the dealer lot. The new Mercedes-AMG E53 wagon may not perform as well as its closest competitors in the Audi RS6 Avant and BMW M5 Touring, but it is a great alternative in the fast wagon segment that is more fuel-efficient and budget-friendly. Overall, while I have a slight preference for the previous AMG E63 S Wagon due to its V8 power and less screen overload, I view the new AMG E53 Wagon as the most underrated vehicle in Mercedes-Benz’s current lineup. Stay tuned to see the best of the rest of what my local Mercedes-Benz retailer had to offer when I was there on Saturday coming up next.
