Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16

The 2.3-16 is the earliest performance-focused version of the Mercedes-Benz 190E and a highly sought-after classic Mercedes-Benz vehicle. This particular 190E performance model was introduced for the 1984 model year and was created and engineered for Mercedes-Benz to compete in the DTM touring car racing series. Powering the 190E 2.3-16 is a Cosworth-tuned 2.3-liter inline-four with 16 valves (four valves per cylinder) producing 185 horsepower in European-spec models, while the U.S. version was detuned to 167 horsepower. Its torque figures are rated at 162 pound-feet, while power is sent to the rear wheels through either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The launch from zero to 60 mph in the 190E 2.3-16 occurs in 7.3 seconds, and it is capable of a top speed of 134 mph. Exterior enhancements on the 2.3-16 compared to the standard 190E consist of a rear wing with an integrated third brake light, flared fenders, and a sportier body kit. As for mechanical improvements over the standard 190E, the 2.3-16 adds an improved suspension, sport seats, a limited-slip differential, and extra gauges for oil temperature, voltage, and lap time. Also, only two colors were offered for the 190E 2.3-16: black and silver.

Production for the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 lasted until 1988, when it was succeeded by the faster and more powerful 190E 2.5-16. Less than 20,000 units of the 190E 2.3-16 were ever built. Current values for the 2.3-16 range between $20,000 and $40,000 and are expected to appreciate in the coming years but not surpass those of its successor, the 2.5-16. I spotted this particular 190E 2.3-16 this past weekend on my way back to my buddy's house from attending the San Jose Sharks game. I don't remember the last time I saw a legit performance-oriented 190E up close besides the 2.5-16 Evo II inside the London Motor Museum seven summers ago. The moment I came across this 190E 2.3-16 while about to pass it on the freeway, I instantly knew I stumbled on something rare, special, and underrated. Overall, the 190E 2.3-16 is a cool, fascinating, and underrated classic Mercedes-Benz, and this moment made for one of my most notable car sightings from this past weekend and this year so far.
