The SLS AMG was Mercedes-Benz's supercar and halo car from the early to mid 2010s. It first debuted for the 2011 model year as the technical replacement for the SLR in Mercedes-Benz's lineup and a modern version of the legendary 300SL from the 1950s. Both examples featured here are of the 2012 model year, so the specs I mention in this post of the SLS AMG reflect those of that specific model year. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8 producing 563 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque paired to a 7-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch gearbox. It launches from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and is capable of a top speed of 197 mph. Like the classic 300SL, the fixed-roof SLS features gullwing doors, and they look amazing. Both the SLS gullwing and roadster come standard with a retractable rear wing that deploys at high speeds over 75 mph and acts as an airbrake when braking. Its interior is luxurious and sophisticated with a premium and performance feel to it.
Mercedes-Benz gave the SLS a significant update for 2013 and referred to the standard model as the SLS AMG GT for the later half of its production run. Mercedes also added a track-focused Black Series model to the SLS portfolio for 2013 and a Final Edition in 2014 before ending production of the SLS after the 2015 model year. Replacing the SLS as the halo sports car in Mercedes-Benz’s lineup is the current AMG GT. I saw these two examples during the previous two times I visited my local Audi/Porsche dealer in August and September, and they are both still available for sale. As I am writing this, the black gullwing is being offered for $230,000, while the silver roadster is being offered for around $150,000. Overall, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was one of my favorite cars as a teenager, and it remains a favorite of mine to this day. This is especially due to its timeless design, big engine, and great performance. Between these two examples, I prefer the black gullwing, but you can’t go wrong with either one.
