2013 Los Angeles Auto Show: Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG

On Saturday, I traveled to L.A. for the day for the L.A. Auto Show. I had a blast looking at all the cool cars on display there. Let me begin with what Mercedes-Benz, my favorite car brand (if I had to choose), unveiled there. First is the range-topping S65 AMG. It has a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 that produces 621 horsepower and 737 lb-ft of torque. 0-62 mph happens in 4.3 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, 220 mph if the limiter is removed. The S65 features weight-saving technology such as a part carbon-fiber hood, lithium-ion battery, 20-inch lightweight alloys, and optional carbon-ceramic brakes. Inside, unique features include sport seats, a bespoke steering wheel, a new head-up display and touchpad, diamond-quilted nappa leather upholstery and an IWC Schaffhausen clock placed in the dashboard. Standard features consist of an AMG-tuned variant of the S-Class' Magic Body Control suspension system and Road Surface Scan that examines the road ahead and automatically tweaks the suspension according to upcoming road conditions. Overall, this is an exceptional car and I would choose this (and maybe the Rolls-Royce Phantom) over any luxury sedan on the market today. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been THE benchmark luxury sedan for many years. The S65 will hit U.S. showrooms mid-way through next year. Pictured below is the 2014 S550. The first two were from the L.A. Auto Show while the rest of them were taken earlier this month.
